Fewer ICE Street Actions Start With Smarter Illinois Policy
If we want fewer ICE agents on neighborhood sidewalks, the solution is not chaos, protests, or citizens trying to intervene in law enforcement actions. The solution is policy change that reduces the need for street-level immigration enforcement in the first place.
In my latest article, I lay out why Illinois’ sanctuary framework, built through the TRUST Act and expanded by the Way Forward Act, has limited cooperation between local law enforcement and federal authorities in ways that make communities less safe. When cooperation is restricted, enforcement does not disappear. It shifts into public settings where the risks and tensions are higher for everyone involved.
I also explain why these laws contribute to detainees being held out of state and why the current approach is costly for communities, taxpayers, and families. If the goal is safer neighborhoods and fewer headline-making confrontations, there is a clear and immediate step the General Assembly can take.
